I started the New Year overweight in poor condition with health issues. Diabetes 2 was heading my way and a replacement hip I’d had replaced a year ago was giving me real problems, due to an accident damaging the muscles. I was told it would take a long time to repair also my age 62 was against me. I knew I had to do something. I kept walking past the XERCISE board in the shopping arcade and it kept attracting me, so one day I went upstairs to the Gym to find out what could be done.
I signed up to do the 12 week plan to target all my problems and more. I came back for my induction and met Lucy, one of the fitness trainers. She then took me through my plan with some really challenging exercises to be carried out 3 times a week and I thought I can do this!
So 8 weeks into my plan I’ve lost 17lbs, my hip is so much improved that I don’t have to go back to the Hospital and I’m walking so much better, although I haven’t had a check done for diabetes 2 but I’m going to be ok. My blood pressure has dropped down, my lung capacity has really improved and I feel so much healthier.
Passing the likes of Roko I could never see the attraction of a gym; all those intense people lined up on treadmills. It even sounds a grind. Surely a long walk would be more interesting and just as beneficial?
It was sheer chance that I came to Xercise when our keep fit class suddenly folded. One of our class members joined the gym and they offered the rest of us a keep fit class at the same cost as our old class. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm and the variety of exercises available that I too became a member. I quickly fell into a routine of arriving at the gym somewhat dishevelled less than 20 mins after getting out of bed, which has the advantage for me of being back home for a shower and breakfast before 9am. With some encouragement and advice I am just about to finish my initial comprehensive 12 week programme and am feeling much fitter as a result.
The gym has a really nice atmosphere, small but beautifully formed as they say.
CHRIS COOKE AGE 72
I had been a regular gym member for a few years but after moving house, changing jobs and with life generally getting in the way, I had virtually stopped doing any exercise at all. This was further complicated by arthritis in both hips which meant I was in considerable pain. After these were replaced I really had no excuses to start exercising again but I didn’t.
Inevitably this led to high blood pressure, increased stress on my other joints and a general feeling of being unwell. As my doctor pointed out I was clinically obese and had an increased chance of developing diabetes and cancer. That was the wakeup call I needed. A complete change of diet meant I lost 3 stone and I felt I could face walking through a gym door.
The welcome at Xercise was so warm and encouraging that I knew I was in the right place. This was two years ago and in this time I have lost a further stone and half and I am probably the fittest I have ever been. The staff team at Xercise have been very patient and understanding with me and have pushed me to do things I never thought possible but always taking into account the limits of my aging bones! My programme has been reviewed on a regular basis ensuring my cardio vascular system keeps improving, and my muscles are toned up with resistance training. To supplement all this my diet has been fine tuned to ensure the results that I was looking for.
Apart from the joy of being able to buy size 12 clothes, rather than the size 22 of a couple of years ago, I feel really well and have the energy to get involved in lots of new projects.
Without the positive attitude and friendliness of Xercise I might never have got off the couch to really enjoy my retirement years. If you are thinking you are too old to join a gym, YOU ARE NOT! You can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome and all the staff will work with you to help you achieve your aims.
JOE HORN (Age 48)
After an 8 month break from going to the Gym on a regular basis I had put on two stone and generally felt that I had very little energy and a lot of back aches and pains. I decided that it was time to get back to the gym and Xercise Fitness recommended that I try the 12 week Gym Summer challenge. I booked on and was shown what it was all about, given some great tips and shown how to maximise my training using different types of exercise that I had not done before. The first three week was a bit of a shock and a challenge to my system but they were excellent at picking up what was causing me problems and adjusted the programme to meet my needs. The Xercise team are great at keeping an eye on you and giving advice and guidance when needed. Five weeks into the challenge and I feel that the structured programme gives me focus and also variety and every session is different and I am really enjoying it. I look forward to completing each session and moving to the next stage where your programme is evaluated and changed to meet your requirements. By doing this challenge I feel I have achieved a far better full body workout and my energy levels have increased far quicker than I expected. I do think that the focus that the programme and Jo and her team give to you encourages you to stick to the routines and you start to feel the benefits a lot quicker. I have been going to Xercise for five years now doing my own exercise routine and I can honestly say that this Summer Gym Challenge has been the first time I actually feel that I am getting the results that I need and really enjoying it.
I signed up for the 12 week summer program with a lot of hesitation – not knowing whether I could cope with it – but with the coaching and overwhelming support provided by Jo and her team, I have stuck to it! – I’m now in my 9th week and I am loving it! I follow the routine with enthusiasm, something I never did on any other program set out for me. I do my workouts 3 times a week and sometimes substitute a workout for one of Sam’s Saturday bootcamps – which is a great group activity, and he’s a great coach too! The way the program is set out, keeps me focussed and motivated and I find myself striving to better myself and increase my fitness levels – the variety of exercises is a must for me, as I’m easily bored and had a tendency in the past to only stay for a short time in the gym and then leave when I thought I was tired – now I follow the routine to the letter and feel like I’ve had a proper workout and the results are coming too, I’m losing weight, changing shape and feeling fitter and healthier. A big thanks to Jo, as her constant help and motivation has been amazing – I know I wouldn’t have been able to do this without her – for taking the time out to show me the how’s and why’s of the program and the time and effort she’s taken to regularly adjust my program to suit my fitness levels and push me that little bit further, when I thought I couldn’t she made me see I could and now I can honestly say that if I can do this…anyone can - so sign up and give it a try – it’ll be worth it!
JODIE SMITH (AGE 25)
For years I have battled with my weight after having my two children. I tried every diet I could think of only to fail and pile pounds back on. I lost 1 st in my first year at Xercise but then struggled to lose any more. Then I met Nige at Xercise gym..... His weight management programme is amazing and inspiring, his enthusiasm for the programme and the courses that he does, gave me the drive to do what was needed to achieve my goals. I lost 20lbs in my first 10 weeks of the programme, I feel fitter than I have ever been and food is no longer my enemy. He advises to lose no more than 1 lb a week so that the regime is sustainable. Over the last 3 years I have gradually lost my weight and I am now 7 stone lighter. There are no restrictions or harsh punishing “diets”, Nigel uses scientifically proven concepts to show how this works and his motivation changes your mindset completely. Nige’s weight management seminar really is a must!!!!

I have loved taking part in the 12 week programme and can't wait to start a second one!! It really delivered for me, because although it was challenging, with so much support it proved absolutely achievable and highly motivating.
Committing to 3 sessions a week for 3 weeks and then doing an “active recovery week” was the key, in other words, being consistent! Working 1:1 with a fitness instructor from time to time ensured the programme was specifically tailored to my own fitness levels and goals. The programme allowed me to modify the exercise I used and the intensity I reached as my fitness levels improved as well as my ability to handle a tough session. They made sure my technique was correct, as well as checking I was working at an appropriate level – flat out at times, easier at others to allow my body to rest and adapt before taking on the next challenge.
What has really worked for me is the enforced “recovery weeks” at week 4, 8 and 12. This not only allowed my body to recover, it made me super keen to start the following week. It very cleverly meant I was working in 3 week blocks. The 3 week commitment followed by 1 week recovery really broke the plan down for me. I thought “surely I can commit to 3 weeks at a time”.
I'd say to anyone…" just get onto it immediately”. It doesn't matter what your current level of fitness is, you will soon be seeing and feeling the results and by week 3 you will be hooked!
The 12 week plan is not just a programme done by fitness instructor… it is a new level of “coaching”, which helps educate you as you make your improvements.
